Dublin

Capital of the Republic of Ireland
Dublin, capital of the Republic of Ireland, is on Ireland’s east coast at the mouth of the River Liffey. Its medieval buildings include 13th-century Dublin Castle and imposing St. Patrick’s Cathedral, founded in 1191. Temple Bar is a riverside nightlife and cultural quarter, home to the Irish Film Institute. Bustling, largely pedestrianised Grafton Street is the city’s principal shopping area, also famed for its buskers.

After the walk we had lunch in the oldest Pub in Dublin. Tipycal Irish food: Medallions of Beef, Fish & Chips and Steamed Mussels.  It was great. We had been practising English.

and the Weather again.

At night we went out to a Pub, live music.

23 October 2016.

We took a train in Tara Street, railway station close to our house and we went to Howth.

Howth is a fishing and yachting port and popular suburban resort on the north side of Howth Head, 15km north-east of the city centre.  Howth Head gives fine views of Dublin Bay and the Wicklow Mountains or Boyne Valley beyond. In the bay is the rocky bird sanctuary and monastic island of Ireland's, to which boat trips may be taken in summer. Cliff paths lead around the coastline, through Howth village and its ruined abbey, and past Baily Lighthouse.

Howth's port

Howth Castle is the private residence of the Gaisford-St Lawrence family. The house is not normally open to the public, but the family recognises that there is an understandable interest in it and its contents. We believe that the fact that the house has been home to the same family for so long is what makes it unique. Unlike many other houses of its size in Ireland it is not a museum or a hotel but a home which we enjoy sharing with others.

It has its origins in medieval times. In 1177 Almeric, the first Lord of Howth, came to Ireland with John de Courcy. Legend has it that on 10th August, the feastday of St Lawrence, at Evora Bridge, close to the Church of Ireland church he won a victory which secured him possession of the Howth peninsula. In gratitude for this he is said to have taken the name of St Lawrence. His descendants still own and live in the castle.

It was an amazing day, you know when your are learning English one of the topic is "The weather", I never think it was very useful but that day we were talking about the weather with a fisher.
